Oakleigh Primary School offers an exciting and progressive LOTE program which introduces students to the language and culture of Japan.
Students from Years 1 – 6 learn Japanese once a week, with an emphasis on listening, speaking, reading and writing. Language classes provide a lively and stimulating environment where students are encouraged to participate in many different activities.
Throughout the study of Japanese, students are able to choose topics of interest which reflect their everyday lives such as sport, pets and food. They enjoy communicating in Japanese through role plays and language games and use ipads to engage in more stimulating language tasks.
Other learning areas such as ICT, Music, Drama and Art are incorporated into the Japanese program which has enabled the students to experience the vibrant culture of Japan. They can sing and dance to festival music and act out plays from traditional folk tales on our school’s outdoor stage. Hands on activities such as origami, calligraphy and manga drawing can enrich a student’s study of the language.
The whole school, including prep students, are involved in biannual Japanese cultural days, where students can experience unique Japanese drumming and traditional sports. Special activities, including cooking and speech competitions are also offered to extend and encourage an interest in Japanese beyond the classroom.
